The Steep Ramp Test (SRT) was originally designed for cardiac rehabilitation. The test was used to determine and optimize the training intensity in adults with chronic heart failure.

With the aid of this test, the stamina of the participant can be estimated. It is a short test that takes only 2 to 3 minutes for most participants. The cardiovascular load is low. That is why the SRT is a feasible and effective measurement instrument in the rehabilitation of COVID-19 patients.

There is no general consensus on exclusion criteria for the test. Originally the exclusion criteria where related to cardiac disfunction. In COVID-19 patient however the disfunction is in the cardio-respiratory system and they should be included. In literature it is reported that the the SRT has not caused any complications with patients with a low load capacity, such as cancer, COPD or cardiac failure.

The SRT allows the therapist to test at a regular interval during the active rehabilitation process to monitor endurance and adjust training if necessary.

The test can be performed on an EN-Cardio Bike Reha.

Firstly position the patient on the bike (adjust seat height if necessary).

Give the following instruction: after the warming-up, the participant must cycle at a speed between 70 - 80 revolutions per minute (RPM). This RPM is indicated on the EN-Cardio Bike Reha console.

Then start the test.

  1. The EN-Cardio Bike Reha will start with the warming-up: cycling for 3 minutes without any load (power = 0)
  2. After 3 minutes the power will inrease from 0 to 25 Watt
  3. After 10 seconds the power will inrease 25 to 50 watts
  4. After 20 seconds the power will inrease 25 to 75 watts
  5. and so on ....
  6. Until the RPM of the participant is less than 60 rounds per minute.
  7. The EN-Cardio Bike Reha will then proceed with a cooling down

Afterwards the EN-Cardio Bike Reha will show a good indication of the power that is optimal for the recovery training of the COVID-19 patient.
