Enraf was founded in the Netherlands as an offspin of the Technical University Delft.

Enraf-Nonius started a long time ago: one hundred years, a whole century!

Enraf was founded in 1925 by A.G. Hoekstra as the Eerste (which is Dutch for First) Netherlands Röntgen Apparatus Factory, so the original name is an acronym!

The factory was originally located in Rijswijk, The Netherlands, but moved to Delft in 1928. The prime focus in that period was röntgen equipment. But in 1932 the first device for diathermy was released, the Curatis. This is a very early predecessor of the Curapuls 670!

Nonius was founded in Delft, The Netherlands, a manufacturer of mechanical measurement equipment.

Enraf focussed primarily on development and production of röntgen tubes. During the second world war, the Enraf factory in Delft was largely destructed.

In the reconstruction period after the war, the former owner of Enraf, A.G. Hoekstra, started a new company in 1948, named Nonius.

A "nonius" is a vernier scale , a visual aid to take an accurate measurement reading between two graduation markings on a linear scale by using mechanical interpolation. Hoekstra recognized the need for precision measurement instrumentation and specialized accordingly in his new company.

The company Enraf experienced difficult times and merged with the English company Evershed & Vignoles to Evershed Enraf in 1955.

Enraf(Evershed) merges with Nonius: Enraf-Nonius is a fact!

Evershed-Enraf specialized in measurement and control technology. Nonius, as producer of precision mechanical instrumentation, was a good partner and hence they merged in 1965 to Enraf-Nonius.

An emerging business for Enraf-Nonius was tank gauging equipment. But also medical units were produced, especially for physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

This was partly related to the recognition of the profession of physiotherapy in the Netherlands at that time. In 1965 the Paramedical Professions Act embraced the Dutch Society for Physiotherapy, as of 1965 a recognized medical profession. The profession was growing, and the technology needed for it was expanding! And Enraf-Nonius could supply!

In 1970 the Enraf-Nonius Medical Distribution Centre (MDC) was relocated from Delft to Brunssum. All the national and international logistic activities were centralized in the south of the Netherlands.

Enraf-Nonius independent in physical rehabilitation equipment

The medical division separated from Delft Instruments Holding and joined Henley Healthcare (Austin, TX, USA) up to 2000. Then Enraf-Nonius became fully independent.

As an independent company, Enraf-Nonius focussed on medical rehabilitation and physiotherapy, with three major product lines:

  • Electro physical agents (formerly known as electrotherapy);
  • Treatment and examination couches
  • Medical rehabilitation

The period after 2000 is characterized as in innovative time with many new products and applications.

In this period, Enraf-Nonius also accelerated with a project division, EN-Projects. Numerous major turnkey healthcare projects were realized. These projects were characterized by excellent all round equipment supply, including healthcare professionals education and after sales service organization at a local level.

In 2005 Enraf-Nonius also moved the logistic centre from Brunssum to a brand-new facility in Echt, the Netherlands.
