VAS - Visual Analogue Scale for pain indication PDF Print E-mail
VAS_Scale_UK The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain indication is most likely a known tool to you. For those of you who are not familiar with VAS yet, we have prepared a short introduction.

1.    Visual Analogue Scale
At the bottom left of this scale it reads “no pain” and at the right bottom side “extremely painful” (this left/right indication is referring to the image used here on the site). The patient indicates how he/she experiences the pain. The therapist takes note of this indication.

2.    Visual Analogue Scale for children
On the left side of this scale it shows a “big smile smiley” (= no pain) and on the right side a “crying smiley”(= extremely painful). The child is asked to choose a smiley image, corresponding with the amount of pain he/she experiences. The therapist takes note of this indication.

3.    Numeric Rating Scale
The numbers 0 (= no pain) to 10 (= extremely painful) are being used to indicate the level of pain experienced. The patient shows by means of the indicator what number he/she appoints to the level of pain.

With each of the 3 above described methods, a certain kind of pain diary can be kept, with which both patient and therapist can keep track of the level of pain, which can be of help with the treatment.

As with many measure methods, the use of VAS is a point of discussion. Please do check literature for more detailed information.
